Managing pests and diseases in the vineyard – study tour

Nutrien Ag Solutions recently hosted a viticulture study tour in Margaret River for 13 vineyard managers from all around Australia.

Tania McAnaney from Nutrien Ag Solutions said the extended wet weather has resulted in an increase in disease in many of the key production areas.

“I’ve been in the industry for over 25 years and have never seen this level of disease across multiple regions. Our team of viticulturalists are out on farm conducting trials to ensure we see minimal tons left on the vine due to disease loads,” said Tania.

“It’s critical that growers remain at the forefront of all the crop protection tools on offer, both synthetic and organic, to grow the best fruit possible. The purpose of the study tour was to upskill and educate some of the industry’s leaders in the latest technologies to strategically manage pests and disease in the vineyard.”

“Horticultural Research Agronomist Scott Paton has been running multiple trials this season, and he was able to demonstrate the performance of synthetic and biological products across multiple diseases including Botrytis, Downy and Powdery Mildew. We also assessed other trial work on Mealybugs and best practice organics in the vineyard.”
