You cane do it!

A sweet reward recognises Audra Allan’s commitment to ensuring the sustainability of the sugarcane industry, with her being announced as a finalist for the QLD Farmers’ Federation Reef Extension Officer Champion Award. 

 Audra is Nutrien Ag Solutions’ North Queensland Farm Services Technical Agronomist and an approved recognised Australian sugarcane adviser.  

With a robust background in the industry, Audra started at the grassroots of the industry and to now the driving force behind creating new technology for clients to manage runoff to ensure the industry remains sustainable.  

“I’m the fifth generation of our family working within the Australian Sugarcane Industry. I started very young out in the paddock with my grandfather, father, uncles, and aunty doing all aspects of farming,” says Audra  

Annette Corcoran, project Co ordinator Nutrien gg Solutions and Cameron Morris, Northeast Merchandise and Fertiliser Manager Nutrien Ag Solutions, nominated Audra for the award. 

“Audra shows outstanding commitment to assisting sugarcane growers with practice changes and adoption to improve water quality within the Great Barrier Reef Lagoon Catchment area while adhering to the Australian sugarcane industry guidelines,” Cameron noted. 

“Audra has been instrumental in the development of Nutrien Ag solutions proprietary software platform that reports and captures farm nitrogen and phosphorous budgets, mapping -nutrient plans, farm soil types, and capturing actual farm records required for Government Legislation.” 

Solution-focused work delivering results drives Audra’s passion. 

“I like challenges with in-field problem-solving. My job is satisfying when delivering improvements to the farming business which increase productivity, profitability, and sustainability,” Audra notes. 

“In addition, I assist sugarcane growers to move towards adopting practice changes to reduce dissolvable inorganic nitrogen off-farm. This is in alliance with Catchment Solutions which is funded by the Great Barrier Reef Foundation, WWF, and Coca-Cola.” 

The Reef Extension Officer Champion Award recognises the exemplary efforts of an extension officer in working with landholder/s to improve their farming practices and reduce run-off entering the Great Barrier Reef.
